If you’ve never used video editing software before, Corel VideoStudio Pro X6 is an excellent place to start. Corel takes great strides to make this software usable to anyone who is willing to learn. The company has boiled down all the steps of video editing into three simple steps: Capture, Edit, Share.

The first step is where you get all your stuff – video clips, audio files, images and more – into this movie maker software. Since everyone has media on a variety of devices, this could take a while. We are happy to see that Corel is able to import media from nearly any device, from a smartphone to external drives and DSLR cameras. Furthermore, the capturing (or importing) process is a simple point-and-click operation. Anyone who is sophisticated enough to install this video editing software will have no problems importing media into it.

The next step is editing. This is where you are going to spend the vast majority of your time. It also is the area where most people, especially the uninitiated, run into the biggest stumbling blocks. Corel does its level best to soften the learning curve in VideoStudio with a streamlined interface that simplifies the workflow during the editing process. All the elements are neatly organized, making it simple to find the elements you are looking for. The timeline makes it that much easier to apply transitions, titles and filters to the various tracks.

Once you finish your project, the final step is sharing it with an audience. This is the home stretch because all the heavy lifting is in the past. Like the first step, sharing is a point-and-click process that should confound no one.

The workspace for this video editing software provides two modes: storyboard and timeline. Storyboard shows an image for each clip, making it easy to quickly see an overview of all of the scenes you've included. The timeline provides detailed information such as audio tracks, transitions, special effects and text.

In the timeline view, you can trim and split clips so that only the portions you want stay in your movie. With VideoStudio Pro X6, you can also perform batch edits, which means you can edit multiple items at the same time. When you edit your video clips, you can do so with peace of mind because this video editing software saves the changes under another name so the original stays unedited.

VideoStudio Pro X6 enables you to adjust the volume, stretch the track duration, fade in or out, alter the sound with the surround sound mixer, adjust stereo channels and apply audio filters to them. When it comes to images, VideoStudio imports photos from a number of different formats to create a photo slideshow or customized menus. You can add a text overlay to any image.

Two tools that play with time and create fun effects are the stop-motion and time-lapse effects. The stop-motion feature on VideoStudio allows you to make animated movies with just a series of photographs. The time-lapse effect creates a unique effect from footage. The application removes a few of the frames and speeds up the video. This is a useful effect if you have video and want to show progression, such as a flower growing or the stars moving.

With Corel VideoStudio, you don't have to worry about your computer slowing down when you're editing movies in HD. Not only does this application use Smart Proxy technology, but also it incorporates technology from Nvidia, which improves the processing speed of the application. Having these options for HD and 3D editing makes a huge difference.

The whole point of making a video with movie making software is so that an audience can see it. As mentioned earlier, Corel VideoStudio Pro X6 makes this easy. The application has several avenues to get your creation in front of an audience’s eyeballs.

The fastest and most common way to share videos is by uploading them to popular social networks such as Facebook and YouTube. VideoStudio enables you to upload to both of these services right from within the application. It also allows you to upload your finished projects to Flickr or your personal website. This is a handy feature because it bypasses the need to export a separate file and manually upload it through the services’ web interface.

Of course, there are times when you want a stand-alone file that’s playable on your computer or other devices such as smartphones and tablets. The export options found in this movie editing application cover all the bases, no matter which device you prefer to watch on.

Finally, there are the physical media production options. VideoStudio has authoring capabilities for both DVD and Blu-ray. Most computers can burn DVDs natively, but it’s likely that you’ll have to purchase a separate Blu-ray burner in order to make that kind of disc.
