How To Convert VHS to DVD
We visit the necessary steps to backup your VHS tapes to a DVD using video editing software.
I'm going to show you how convert your VHS tape on to your computer for DVD burning. Now the items you're going to need of course is a VHS play, your computer, and you may also need an analog-to-digital converter. But we'll get into that later. Now the last item that you're going to need is the proper cords to hook your items together. The easiest set up you could hope for is a computer that has an analog input that looks like this. If have this set then you'll be able to video directly into your computer. If you don't then you'll either have to consider buying a video card, or buying a analog to digital converter. An external analog converter will be the easiest option since you wont' have to open you computer to install hardware. You can find several different kinds of converters at most any electronics store for around 40.00 dollars and up. One last thing about converters, they will hook up to your computer via usb or firewire. Make sure you have the correct connections on your computer when you buy your converter. Next make sure you have pleanty of disk space on your computer since capturing video can take up a lot of space. You can plan on using around 12 gigs of space for every hour you plan on capturing. Finally, make sure your computer has a DVD burner for recording and playback on your computer. OK, now let's connect the machines. In order to connect the VCR to the computer or converter you'll need RCA cords. These are the red, white, and yellow cords. Most likely you already have these cords as the probably came with your VCR. If you don't have these cords you can usually pick these up at any electronics store for less the fifteen dollars. Now, connect your RCA cords to the output jacks on your VCR. Next either hook your VCR direct into your computers input jacks, or the input jacks on your converter. Finally you'll run the usb or firewire from the output jack on your converter to the input jack on the computer. Next, fire up your video editing software. For this demonstration we're gong to use Corel Video Studio. Start the capturing process on your computer then press play on your VCR. Once you have all the footage captured, drag it into your timeline. Then you can either edit the footage or take it as is. Then use your software to export your footage onto DVD. Once the DVD is done burning you can play it back on almost any DVD player.
